Design Trend

Are seals a new web design trend? I mean like the little gold foil stickers on diplomas and other important documents? Noticed it on the header at inforedesign [via], and recalled seeing one on the recently revamped ALA: “The numerical bug that sits atop the logo and astride the nav bar makes each issue feel like an important limited edition.” Seems like i’ve seen ‘em elsewhere too.
Man, that List Apart design is so solid. Visually pleasing and clean, with the secondary column tucked neatly to the right of the fold. Love the hover highlight effect on multi-line article titles. The whole thing is just really well-done. Lots of inspiration for the stealin.

I’ve designed my site in July and released SEP 1st. I don’t read ALA but heard about ALA-redesign, but didnt see front page.
Here is another post by another man about “seals” :) (http://agat.in/blog/dizayn/medalki-%e2%80%94-novaya-moda/).
Ideas are in the air!

Ah, nice link—that’s interesting. Wish i could read your site, and the other one, though.

Yeah, thanks for the summary, i figured it was something like that. :) At least now i have some pictures to point to – i didn’t feel like posting screenshots of my own.

Just a small question – with which program can I create such medals quickly?

I’m not aware of any program or plugin specifically for making them. I would assume the examples here were done by hand; they’re all slightly different. You might try contacting Denis at inforedesign, or reading through the discussion page for that ALA redesign article, or contacting R. Marie Cox who designed that Side Job site.

Even more seals at Download.com. Click on the Download Now link so it goes to the “You are being redirected to a third-party download site…” page to see the green Free seal on the “JOIN NOW!” section in the middle (couldn’t figure out another way to get it to show that). Also notice the small “BETA” seal on the Videos tab on the main nav bar.

Medallions
Where web design and fashion cross:
From CARGO magazine “Fashion Trends… Medallion Ties,” December/January 2006.
Yeah, so i guess they’re called medallions.
Another example of the web variant has been in use at Dell.com:

Whenever I frequent miahz.com, I end up both impressed and perplexed at an amazing world of design and electronic chatter that I know nothing about and am intimidated that I’ll never tap into it.
I’m not sure why, but by the time I cease my browsing and wandering down trails of links, I end up feeling quite small.
