Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Yeah, had to see it again, because i forgot to invite a friend last night—woops. Also wanted to see it again because i had a headache and it was hard to watch the first time. Pretty much all my opinions from before remain. Way too sitcomy for me. Partly due to the writing style, but a lot due to the story itself. The first film was unique because you were immediately thrust into a mystery with Ethan, and related to him as he tried to uncover what was going on. He also had flaws. Since that initial film, it’s as if he’s become an invincible superhero. Now his only weakness is love. Please.

It does a good job of keeping things moving so you don’t have time to think about how impossible the things they do actually are. On the other hand, there’s almost way too much action. Maybe Ethan Hunt doesn’t need to stop to catch his breath, but there’s something to be said for pacing.

And on the craft side of things, i was paying attention to the music once again, and realized it was both the piano and string elements throughout that sound like they were lifted from an episode of Lost. The focus was horrible in many parts. I guess it can be hard to nail it in an action film like this where people are constantly moving and lunging and flinching. But geez, talking heads in an office? I think that’s my new nit—how well focus is pulled. When i was at school and watched a couple movies every week, my nit was ADR and sound mixing. Not sure if dialog in films just got better, or my ear lost its sharpness, or i don’t watch enough movies—probably all of the above—but i don’t really notice it anymore. Which is how it should be.

I’ll also go ahead and suggest that there’s not much need to see this twice.

  1. thanks for the insight into the movie. I knew that I could most likely save my $10 bucks and pay $20 when I rented it and forgot to take the movie back. (haha)
Pretty money review you got going on there. I really enjoyed your input

  2. so what in the heck? I was totally shocked by the format change. Pretty nifty though homie. My little blog needs some serious professional help…it’s functional…
