The Illusionist (2006)

The lamer of the two magic flicks. The other being The Prestige which i saw in the theater. It’s weird how some movies come out in pairs, which ultimately demands a comparison. Deep Impact and Armageddon comes to mind. (Though those were both bad movies, but for different reasons.)

It’s probably easiest to put it this way. The Prestige:

  • Was more masterfully directed.
  • Didn’t have cheesy-effect cinematography.
  • Had arguably better acting.
  • Didn’t use bad computer animation to portray the illusions.
  • Had a more brizzler dime brizzle.
  • Gave you the satisfaction of learning the secret behind the tricks.
  • Wasn’t a bad rehash of Romeo + Juliet.
  • Wasn’t on the stereotypical “all the ‘foreign’ characters speak English in a strange British accent even when they’re supposed to be from a non-English-speaking country” tip.

  1. Love you insight and perspective on things so much. I was wanting to check both of these out. I was leaning more toward the Prestige just for the simple fact that sexy Wolverine/HuJack was in it….Love love love…sorry, anyway I’ll definately do the Prestige first and soon to check it out…

I’m not sure where I can just make a general comment, but I’m mighty disappointed. No review or comment about 300 yet.

Granted good friends are in town and you’ve only had one evening since the viewing–an evening of 24 at that. Fine so “disappointed” is too strong, but I want to know…

  2. Yeah, i’m backed up. There’s probably 4-5 flicks i haven’t posted yet.

Including “Guess who’s coming to dinner?” Or do you only cover new releases?

  3. Every movie i watch. Theater, DVD, TV—doesn’t matter, as long as i see it in its entirety. At least that’s the plan. So yeah, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, The Departed, 300, and Babel.
