mdo, as far as i’ve seen, Facebook has never supported transparent image formats — everything is converted to JPEG.

I’ve also discovered recently that JPEGs are also converted to an altered color profile (“sRGB IEC61966-2-1 black scaled” not the same as the standard sRGB), which can be frustrating if you try to save them with a specific profile to achieve a specific look or match to something.

Also of note, Facebook recently increased their maximum image dimension to 720 pixels.

Facebook is upsetting. I was working on a client’s fan page and wanted some areas of the profile picture to appear transparent, and to my surprise it kept changing to white when I uploaded them…

Aejay, that would kinda work, but only for the main profile page, and like you said, only with a one-line status.

It would then look out of place when it’s used as a thumbnail on Walls and elsewhere on the site. True transparency would be nice.

You can make your facebook profile picture seem transparent by replicating that shaded blue area (that starts at the dark blue facebook main menu, and ends after your status) within the picture. The only problem is that the shaded area gets longer depending on how many lines of text your status has. So, for example, my profile picture requires me to have one-line status updates, otherwise it doesn’t match up.

It would sure be nice if they would just allow transparent png formats without converting them.

Thanks for catching that, gareth. You’re right Facebook’s max dimension is not 500, but it’s actually 604 pixels. I think i accidentally carried that over from some Flickr images i uploaded to Facebook. Updating the post…
