Part a long-running realization that i waste a lot of time, and part kick-in-the-pants after just reading “The myth of ‘keeping up’” at Creating Passionate Users [via Lifehacker], i’m trimming some unnecessary input. So that means stuff like all the consumer- and pop-culture-related feeds i was subscribed to in Google Reader. I need to limit my web/blog reading/wandering all around—too often i surrender to my curiosity, but am no better off for it.

[Shout out to SessionSaver. Firefox just crashed, and the SessionSaver extension brought everything back up just how it was---tabs, text, and all.]

More discipline. That’s what it all boils down to. Oh yeah, i need to clean up the Web Clips feeds in Gmail. Better yet, maybe i’ll just turn them off. It’s interesting stuff, but truely just a time-wasting distraction. Now i just have to figure out a way to stop people from sending me those “funny” emails from work.

[Hmm. Somehow, most of this post was eaten when published, so i had to rewrite it from memory. Some errant quote encoding is likely to blame.]

As i prep to upgrade my home box to Firefox 1.5 i’m making sure all my must-have extensions are 1.5 compatible. Last i checked, many weren’t, which is why i didn’t upgrade right away. But now it looks like most have been updated, so here they are:

My most-used extension is DictionarySearch, hands down. Because i spell only as well as the closest dictionary. And because i have it linked to Answers.com which pulls info from a bunch of great reference sources. And because it works from within textareas so you can check stuff you’re writing. It’s one of those things that’s so useful, yet so terribly simple that it should come installed from the factory.
Install DictionarySearch.

I also end up using MakeLink a lot when citing site links for blog posts. I have it set to copy both the URL and site title and format it into a proper HTML link with a title attribute.
Install MakeLink 2.0.3.

TripleSelect is an extension that i’ve grown really fond of. It makes Firefox replicate the standard Microsoft behavior of selecting the entire paragraph on a triple-click. Firefox normally only selects the line. The beautiful thing about it is that you can still only select the line by doing 2.5 clicks (double+hold down).
Install TripleSelect 1.7.

I’m glad to see that miniT (drag+indicator) is now built-in functionality in Firefox 1.5. (I’ve had the drag indicator themed in LCD for a while now.)

SessionSaver is a life saver. It just works. Ironically, i haven’t experienced many crashes lately, but i don’t miss a beat if i do.
Install SessionSaver.

Couldn’t do without Adblock Plus. Almost literally. Flash ads bring my aged machine to its knees. Coupled with Filterset.G, you’ll never have to look at another ad again. (The filter rules can be a bit agressive sometimes—blocking actual content, but they’re constantly being refined.)
Install AdBlock Plus 0.5.11.2.
Install Filterset.G Updater 0.2.9.

I read that Link Toolbar for 1.5 would require a separate extension to place it on the status bar. But i just realized that i pretty much only use it for navigating up through directories in a URL, so i’m gonna try going back to Digger, which i haven’t used since the Firebird era.
Install Digger 1.0

I use IE View occassionaly to peep sites from the other side of the fence, or if some page doesn’t work in Firefox.
Install IE View.

<del datetime="2006-01-30T22:51:1905:00">You used to be able to drag any bit of text (non-linked URLs, domain names, etc.) to the tab bar and Firefox would try to open it in a new tab. Somewhere along the way after 1.0 that stopped working. Right-Click-Link fills that void.
Install Right-Click-Link 1.1.1</del>
Dragging text to the tabbar seems to be fixed in 1.5, so i don’t need this extension anymore.

I’ve used ScreenGrab a little, but i’m not thrilled that it uses Java. Too slow on my machine. Not sure if i’m going to reinstall it in 1.5.

I had a few others installed, but never used them. Out with the old.

I thought that Dreamweaver came with that functionality built-in, but it didn’t. And i wasn’t really sure where to go from there. Setting up a server and PHP and whatever else to make it work sounded a little too daunting for me to try.

But EasyPHP was truely that: easy. Just run the downloaded install program and click Next a few times. The hardest part was figuring out how to change the language to English from the default French (double-click the tray icon then pick your language from the drop-down menu).

And i wasn’t even really looking for anything specific or truely browsing at the time. Just opening random links to test some changes in LCD, and the link Local web testing: EasyPHP at figby.com caught my eye. Serendipity at its finest.

Now, hopefully, i’ll be able to have a simpler development process when i start redesigning this site. My previous method was horrible, but i’ll have to write about that some other time.

A few quick searches brought up no results for anything similar, though i’m sure the idea is not original, especially with that article’s recent popularity. A toolbar very much like the current bookmark toolbar but which dynamically shows the most frequently visited addresses (from the history) as clickable “bookmark” links. This may be the idea that finally makes me dig into extension development. As if i need more unfinished projects to not work on.

Just realized i’ve lost three week’s worth of browsing history due to a system crash. It tends to happen because the history.dat file gets corrupted if Firefox was running at the time of the crash. Normally i back up the file and try to rescue-edit it, which usually works. But i guess last time it crashed and restarted overnight, and i didn’t notice the next time i sat down. So i had to revert to an old backup. This is probably no big deal to most people, but i set my History to 9999 days (so it basically never expires) because i like to know where i’ve been. Ever. Not just in the past 9 days. Though doing so creates a whole other set of problems. My history.dat file is currently over 36MB. It’d probably be closer to 50 if i didn’t keep losing data from crashes, and might be around 100MB if there was a way to merge all the old Histories from some of my old profile backups. That might be possible in the future with some changes to how Histories work. The large files and slow performance are the main reasons i’ve been putting off setting up Firefox on my USB drive—which would help solve another major annoyance of mine: bookmark syncing.

On a related note, the new How’d I Get Here extension looks interesting, though i’ve yet to install a trunk build and try it out.
