NoVA Infinite, Kenny Kohlhaas & Minh – Live at IOTA

Recorded on a Sony HDR-FX7 HDV camcorder with the built-in mic, so the video is noisy and the audio is a little loud. While that was on a tripod, i was also shooting stills and video around the room with my new Canon 7D DSLR. I wasn’t depending on it for anything crucial since i’d only had it about a week and wasn’t fully comfortable yet, and also didn’t have enough cards to record everything.

Minh performed a 30-minute set of his songs with the assistance of Kenny on guitar at IOTA in Clarendon tonight.

I was on the sneak tip because i wasn’t sure if photography was allowed. This was pretty much the only decent picture that came out. Cleaned it up a little in Photoshop.

The New Aguilera Joint

Christina Aguilera has a new song out called “Ain’t No Other Man.” It’s got a similar sound to “Lady Marmalade”—sort of an upbeat retro flavor with some funky horns. Very fun and catchy. It’ll be played out out soon enough i’m sure.

I haven’t been up on the TRL scene, so it was a pleasant suprise to hear something new from Miss Aguilera. The single should be officially released in a few weeks, but is obviously spreading already online and on radio. Looking forward to the new album Back to Basics, which drops August 15th. Stripped was a solidly good album; her third will no doubt be at least as good.

Musical Memories

I’ve heard that smell is the sense most closely tied to memory. I’d have to say that sound—or more specifically: music—is probably the second. It’s amazing how instantly a song or album can transport you to a past time, place, or state of mind. Usually there’s an obvious connection: the song was playing at the moment, or it was a popular song during the era. This is a powerful and valuable link that i like to have regardless of whether i liked the song or not. That’s why i hate when songs get played out—they get so diluted until they lose that identity. Equally interesting, and sometimes frustrating, is that your “trigger songs” can mean something completely different—or mean nothing at all—to someone else.

I’m listening to John Legend’s Get Lifted which takes me to autumn of 2005 and many of the memories and feelings that followed last summer. (Due, in part, because i was too lazy to change discs in my car changer for a few months.)

Wake-Up Songs

Just woke up from some solid catch-up sleep after being up way later than i had wanted to last night. The Snoop Dogg song “Let’s Get Blown” was in my head. No idea why. Completely random. But i feel a little bit like i had been “singing” it in my sleep all night long. I don’t even really know that song—just the chorus. So weird how that happens.
