Going On A Diet

Part a long-running realization that i waste a lot of time, and part kick-in-the-pants after just reading “The myth of ‘keeping up’” at Creating Passionate Users [via Lifehacker], i’m trimming some unnecessary input. So that means stuff like all the consumer- and pop-culture-related feeds i was subscribed to in Google Reader. I need to limit my web/blog reading/wandering all around—too often i surrender to my curiosity, but am no better off for it.

[Shout out to SessionSaver. Firefox just crashed, and the SessionSaver extension brought everything back up just how it was---tabs, text, and all.]

More discipline. That’s what it all boils down to. Oh yeah, i need to clean up the Web Clips feeds in Gmail. Better yet, maybe i’ll just turn them off. It’s interesting stuff, but truely just a time-wasting distraction. Now i just have to figure out a way to stop people from sending me those “funny” emails from work.

Wanna learn to swim, fast? Jump in the deep end. Wanna update LCD for Firefox 1.5? Just put it on so i’m forced to fix it or live with the bustage.

All the everyday stuff should work—i can get along in Flock just fine. But the Options window doesn’t work at all. There may be one or two other big things, but other than that it’s just gonna be bits of polish here and there. The only thing preventing me from diving into the water is the few can’t-live-without extensions that haven’t been updated for 1.5 yet. I seem to remember there was something you could run old extensions through to make them compatible, but haven’t been able to find it, if there was such a thing.

I need to start saving. ING Direct‘s savings options look pretty good—no fees or minimums [Quicken or Microsoft Money. I’ve been sort of using a simple Excel sheet mostly to keep track of my bills and make sure i have enough to pay them. But it’s too manual. And only a narrow view of all my finances. Not quite the comprehensive monthly budget i’d like.

Update:
And with a little searching, i found the answer to my only remaining question: “Can i direct deposit into an ING Direct savings account?” This Consumerism Commentary article links to ING’s routing number and other info, necessary for direct deposits.

anhell found LCD last month. And i think it says he likes it. Weird how i keep stumbling on sites that discover LCD, even though i haven’t released an update in over a year. I wonder if they’re even able to use it—it’s only compatible with Firefox 0.8 (and older). [via]
