Why is Date in menu bar a "new" feature in Snow Leopard 10.6?

This was one of the first things i changed when i got my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5 back in December 2007.

System Preferences… > International > Formats > Time / Customize…
Show: Medium

How To Make It Work

The trick is to copy the Month and Date elements from the Date / Customize… section first, then paste them into the Times edit box.

First open the Date / Customize… panel and copy whatever Date Elements you want to use (i used the two-digit month and date like this: MM/DD). Then open the Time / Customize… panel and paste them into place as shown above. Format as you please, but i suggest using the two-digit month and day and the four-digit 24-hour time for most efficient use of space on the menu bar (MM/DD-hh:mm).

Screengrab script for Ubiquity is the easiest way to capture screenshots of entire web pages in Firefox

It’s been a little while since i first wrote about Ubiquity. That’s partly because it’s a little difficult to get into the Ubiquity frame of mind. It makes things much easier to do, but you do have to get yourself into the habit of using it, instead of going about the “old ways” which generally take longer. It also helps if there’s a script written for that thing you want to do.

I found once such script the other day. PurpleFloyd’s Screengrab script for Ubiquity is no doubt the simplest way to capture images of entire web pages. Cmd Shift 3/4 is great for quick snaps of the whole screen or cropped portions on Macs [thanks, Mark], but if you have to scroll and can’t get the whole page in one shot, this is the way to go. Just subscribe to the screengrab script, and that’s it. No extensions to install, no new buttons or key combos; it just works using capabilities already built into Firefox. Just fire Ubiquity and type: screengrab.

I did run into a few slight issues while trying it out. First, if you save to a file, it sticks a PNG image in your Temporary folder (on Macs that’s: ~/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/, on Windows: Documents and SettingsUSERLocal SettingsTemp) — not the most deft location. Took me a minute to figure out where my new images landed; Desktop or maybe Documents would make more sense. When i first tried it, the script struggled on some pages with CSS layouts and didn’t capture the entire document, but that seems to have been reosolved. The other command that copies the image to the clipboard (instead of saving a file) only pastes into rich text edit boxes in Firefox, such as a Gmail compose window or perhaps your blog writing screen, and not into external image editors like Photoshop.

I can’t wait to discover more interesting ways to use Ubiquity. Please comment with your favorite Ubiquity commands.

Ironically, WordPress’ Texturize filter chokes when the phrase “web 2.0″ is quoted. Texturize automatically makes semantically-correct curly quotes and other punctuational fixes to regularly typed text. Normally that’s great for people like me who care about stuff like that. But when a quoted phrase ends in a number, it turns the closing quote into a double-prime character as if it were a count of seconds or inches.

I noticed this a few minutes ago when writing my previous post.

To complete the irony, i have to use a hack to get WordPress to correctly display the closing curly quote on the phrase “Web 2.0”—exploiting its behavior to turn two apostrophes into a right double quotation mark.

[In response to Firefox 2.0b2 theme issues at jedbrown.net (comments about the new theme "refresh" in Firefox 2 beta 2).]

The Mozilla Wiki FX2 Visual Update/Default Theme Update page outlines the motivation for the changes, which, unfortunately, gives the shaft to Windows classic (Windows XP with Luna turned off, and Windows 2000 and older).

My biggest beef is that there’s no hover outline on any of the toolbar buttons anymore (like on the bookmarks toolbar). The only feedback you get is the slight color change on hover. (That goes for Windows classic, at least.) And that means there is no hover feedback in text-only mode. The back/forward dropdown arrows become tricky because of this—there’s nothing to let you know that different things happen depending on where you click on the back button. It’s also UI inconsistency with the Bookmarks manager, which does have hover/click outlines.

There is a CSS bug that highlights the dropmarker when you click on the back/forward buttons while they are disabled.

I agree with most that the new icons are too washed out and edgy. And too small. There’s hardly a difference between large/small size—what’s the point? I won’t even get into the actual design and meaningfulness of the icons.

I like the concepts of the “attached” go and search buttons, but they look raw and unfinished in Windows Classic. I like the change made to the search engine selector button since the previous Beta.

The pixel shift on tab overflow is amateur theme coding.

I like many of the changes to the tabs—the new overflow buttons and dropmenu are great for usability. But the styling of the tabs themselves is a step back. Faded colors and bold text are not enough to delineate between selected tabs. I can barely tell the difference on this laptop’s LCD display. There needs to be some other size or shape differences that hint at what’s going on.

The landscape page orientation icon in the Page Layout dialog is wrong (though i don’t know if that’s leftover from the last incarnation).

More discussion at:
MozillaZine Themes Forum
Asa Dotzler’s blog
jedbrown.net | blog2

Bug 347454 is tracking issues with the new theme change. At a glance, it appears that many of the issues that have been brought up already have attention or have even been fixed.

There’s currently 169 comments in the 15 day cue. Seems to be high tide—it fluctuates down to around 60 or so. Still no false positives. I’ve had to moderate about 75 comments.

I’m hacking on LCD a bit for the first time in some weeks. Trying to pick up where i left off on the new Options window. But also wanted to get down as a reminder that the Downloads and Extensions windows look horrible. A lot of little things are busted in those windows, but it’s most likely a case of moved/renamed elements/classes/IDs, so it’ll just take some resyncing of CSS selectors, and probably not much new code.

I downloaded the newest Alpha 3 of Bon Echo, but haven’t yet installed it. Very curious to see what kind of changes are going on in the next generation of Firefox. The anti-phishing popup shown in the screenshots at Mozilla Links looks a little scary. Not quite sure how that would look in LCD. But other things like the integrated search button in the Search Bar are something i’ve basically already done with the icons on the Location Bar. I also already have the magnifying glass icon from back when you could search the document from the search bar—back before the Find bar at the bottom of the window.

I’ve been thinking about releasing lately. I had been thinking that i could just push out what i have and iron out any kinks with updates. But it’s good that i cracked this open, because i realized that there are still some very rough spots that aren’t quite ready.
