Yeah, so we’re watching SNL, and Ashlee Simpson is performing her song “Pieces Of Me.” It sounds a little weird or something, but it might just be the way the TV is set up in the new place. Though after a little while it becomes apparent she’s lip-synching. Not blatantly obvious or bad, but you can just tell. After a few skits, she’s back out for her second song. The band begins to play, and she does her little pre-song dance, mic in-hand, but then we hear her voice track from the song she did earlier. She looks at the band, and they look at her. The band quickly starts playing along with the track, and Ms. Simpson simply starts to do a jig. Because what else can you do? Not only did someone screw up and play the wrong track, but anyone who didn’t realize the first time now knows she wasn’t really singing. So the band just kept playing, and she mosied herself offstage. It was one of those beautifully awkward moments that you don’t always get to see as they happen. The wonders of live television.
By now lip-synching has lost some its taboo, so it’s not that big of a deal. They “perform” as if nothing is awry, and those who notice feel clever because they’re “in on it.” Hopefully everyone else is oblivious. But then something like this happens and the oblivious can’t help but figure it out. I’m just wondering why she was synching in the first place. I saw her actually sing “Shadow” on Leno several weeks ago and was impressed. A much better perfomance than what you hear on the radio.
Unfortunately for Ashlee Simpson, a clip of her getting “busted” is already circulating on the file-sharing networks, and the event is sure to be the hot pop gossip news of the week.
